Knowing how to save money on your electric bill is something they should teach in school, but since they don't here's a few tips we have found that work wonders!

    • Electricity bill spiked, why?

Ways to lower your Electricity bill

    1. Unplug electronics after using
    2. Turn lights off
    3. Invest in solar panels
    4. Switch to LED lightbulbs
    5. Invest in high efficiency appliances
    6. Adjust thermostat when you aren't home.
    7. Use blackout curtains
    8. Clean your air conditioner

    1.Unplug electronics after using

A lot of electronics are energy vampires. This means they are using electricity while they are plugged in whether you are using it or not.

    2. Turn lights off

Another simple way to save money is to turn your lights off. When it's sunny out, use natural light to see.

Or make sure to turn lights off after you leave a room, we've all done this!

    3. Invest in Solar Panels

Solar energy is quickly becoming a choice for many especially when you live in a sunny state like California.

While solar panels used to be pricey, they have come a long way and are becoming a great option for everyone who want to either supplement or completely switch.

    4. Switch to LED lightbulbs

LED lightbulbs use way less energy than a standard incandescent.

Initially, this will cost you a little more, up front. Over time, you will get your money back from the savings on your electricity bill.

    5. High Efficiency appliances

This is another investment that costs a little more especially if you have to replace old appliances that still work.

Having a high efficiency air conditioner can save you thousands of dollars in the long run on utility bills.

    6. Adjust thermostat when you aren't home

One way to easily do this is with a programmable thermostat, or our favorite a smart thermostat.

When you leave for work adjust about 7 degrees above where you normally keep your setting (air conditioner set 7 degrees warmer, heater 7 degrees cooler).

If you have pets though, you may only want to adjust 3 or 4 degrees.

    7. Blackout curtains

Windows can let a lot of heat into your home, which is why we use blackout curtains in our home.

Not only do they keep lots of light out, but they also keep the heat out as well.

    8. Clean your air conditioner

Air conditioners can build up a lot of dirt in the vents of your outside unit, which makes the air conditioner have to work harder.

What costs the most on your electric bill?

For most people, the biggest cost on your electricity bill comes from the air conditioner especially in the summer.

The next biggest culprits are large appliances like the dryer and oven.

    Electricity bill spiked, why?

Sometimes electricity bills spike, and can mean some serious money for just one bill. Here's the most common reason why your electricity bill spiked, and what you should do:

    • Air conditioner is not working properly (this pulls the most energy by far, and when it's low on freon or malfunctioning you might first notice a huge bill).

Just remember to follow a few of these helpful tips to save on your electricity bill.
